Ellen Ector, is a mother of five and a grandmother of four. She was a certified social worker for 20 years and then one day she just decided to stop. Ector always wanted to pursue a career in fitness, so in 2009 that’s exactly what she did.
She quit her job on a whim and has never looked back.
“I haven’t looked back since….I love what I do”
Says Ector who now co-owns Gymnetics Fitness and GymJuice in Atlanta. Her main goal is to help women of color learn about fitness to protect their health.
Elaine got especially into health and fitness after her mother passed away from uterine Cancer at the age of 63.
The CDC reports that 57.6% of black women 20 years or older are obese. According to the Mayo Clinic obesity increases the risk of uterine cancer.
There are other diseases that affect women of color as well such as heart disease, diabetes, and other types of cancers. She gives this helpful advice when it comes to the importance of health and how it affects your life.
“ Don’t use your body as a dump. Stop dumping in your boyfriend problems, stop dumping in the bad food.”
The decision to change her life around completely was not an easy one, but she knew what she had to do. When you know, you just know.
“I said either you’re gonna do this fitness thing or you’ll be working for someone else for the rest of your life” says Ector. Her daughter Lana joined her mother in her fitness career. The two of them released the workout DVD Black Girls Workout Too!
The goal is to help women get on the right path of fitness. Each workout contains little to no equipment, which was strategically done by Ector and her daughter. This makes a fitness transformation truly available to anyone. Their plan to do things this way is geared toward women who may not be able to afford a gym membership. Workout DVD’s are also a great idea for busy women on the go and stay at home moms.
Ellen and Lana have already created two parts to their Fitness DVD and the third will be coming out soon. Keep your eyes out for the third one. Meanwhile, you can purchase the DVD’s here
