Faith Tuesday: Mother’s Day
Duty or Devotion?
“Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the LORD your God is giving you.” Exodus 20:12
Or commonly known as “Call your mother.” Pretty much. Mother’s Day can be tricky business. Some of us enjoy wonderful adult relationships with our moms, for others it’s a mine field at best. For those of us whose daughter/momma relationship is born out of devotion Mother’s Day is easy-peasy. And if you are in the latter group? Well… sometimes you’ll find yourself in Hallmark staring at cards for an hour because your relationship with your Mom doesn’t quite fit any of the feel-good vibes on display.
“I know I’m supposed to honor my mother, but I’m not feeling it.” The truth is we don’t get a pass on this honor your parents deal. No matter how we feel. How do we turn duty into devotion? We can’t on our own. We can with Jesus. He has always been the way-maker. Will you trust Him today in this area?
Call Your Mom
There are three things you can do today to turn your duty into devotion regarding your relationship with your Mom. Pray for her. Remember the same God who is working in your life is working in hers. Be consistent with intention to be in contact. Call your mom.Serve her. Yep, serve her.
Over time, you’ll see something happen. The beauty and mystery of grace is it may not ever be your mom who changes…but it will be you. Your heart towards your mom will soften. As you surrender this to the Lord, you will see what once was a duty, become a privilege. It will become an honor to honor your mom in these ways. When we honor our moms, we honor God. Call your mom.
